Mission

Independent labor rights monitoring organization, conducting investigations of working conditions in factories around the globe. Our purpose is to combat sweatshops & protect the rights of workers who make apparel & other products.

To assist in the enforcement of manufacturing codes of conduct adopted by our 151 affiliate colleges and universities in order to promote better working conditions in the production of their licensed apparel and also works more broadly to promote respect for the rights of workers in global supply chains.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 4

The organization updated its bylaws in june 2024 to reflect the scope of wrc's work, which includes, in addition to the primary focus on university licensed merchandise, investigations and projects involving non-collegiate factories and products other than apparel. Section 1.2 purpose. The corporation, which is not a membership organization, shall be established and maintained for the following purposes: to promote socially responsible initiatives by universities, colleges, governments, institutional investors, apparel brands and manufacturers, for the improvement of working conditions and labor standards in domestic and global production, especially of products and merchandise, bearing the indicia of universities and colleges; to conduct education and research promoting awareness of and appropriate responses to ethically unacceptable working conditions such as child, sub-living-wage, discriminatory, unsafe, and other forms of abusive labor, particularly in the manufacturing of products and merchandise, bearing college and university indicia; to codify and promote compliance with ethical standards of conduct adopted for supply chains by college and university licensors, governments, institutional investors, brands and manufacturers, including but not limited to standards for living wages, child labor, women's rights, the right to organize and bargain collectively, and health and safety, in light of the "key wrc principles" set forth in annex i of these bylaws; to gather and publicly disseminate information regarding the locations and conditions of workplaces where products and merchandise, especially those bearing college and university indicia, are manufactured; and to conduct such other monitoring and/or educational efforts as the board of directors deems appropriate.

The consortium has universities throughout north america that are affiliates of the consortium. The consortium has three constituencies: 1) the united students against sweatshops, 2) the advisory council, and 3) universities and schools that have affiliated with the corporation ("university caucus"). There shall be eighteen directors of the corporation. The directors shall be divided into three groups and shall be known as class i, class ii and class iii. Class i shall have 6 directors, all of whom are elected by the usas constituency. Class ii shall have 6 directors, all of whom shall be elected by the university caucus constituency. Class iii shall have 6 directors, all of whom shall be elected by the advisory council consistuency.

Board members, officers and key employees are required to sign a conflict of interest form on an annual basis. In addition, any possible conflict of interests shall be disclosed to the board of directors as soon as it becomes apparent.

The board of directors requests and obtains the audit committee's study of the appropriate compensation data. This data includes information on compensation paid by similarly situated non-profit organization to their executive directors, including three comparable organizations in washington, d.c., or similar communities for similiar services. The last time this review process was undertaken was on october 21, 2022. The board of directors has not increased the executive director's compensation since completing this review. The organization has no other officers or key employees.

WRC WORKS TO PROTECT THE RIGHTS OF WORKERS MAKING APPAREL AND OTHER GOODS, PRIMARILY AT FACTORIES ASSOCIATED WITH ITS AFFILIATE EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONAL PARTNERS. WRC ASSESSES CODE OF CONDUCT COMPLIANCE, IDENTIFIES VIOLATIONS, AND PROMOTES REMEDIATION AT NUMEROUS PRODUCTION FACILITIES AROUND THE WORLD, WHILE ALSO WORKING TO PROMOTE BETTER LABOR PRACTICES THROUGHOUT THE BROADER APPAREL INDUSTRY AND IN OTHER MANUFACTURING SECTORS. WRC'S EFFORTS HAVE HELPED THOUSANDS OF WORKERS IMPROVE THEIR WORKING CONDITIONS, WAGES, AND RESPECT FOR THE FUNDAMENTAL WORKPLACE RIGHTS. WRC IS ABLE TO RUN ITS PROGRAMS FROM REVENUE GENERATED BY AFFILIATE DUES, GRANTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS, AND PROGRAMS.
