The organization changed its year-end and prepared a return for the period 5/1/2023 - 6/30/2023. The return was paper mailed and postmarked on 10/30/2023. We had no communication with the irs until receiving the letter on 5/17/2024 indicating that it was considered incomplete as it was not efiled. We were not aware of the change in irs requirements for short-year returns. It was our understanding that short year returns had to be paper filed. We do now see that this changed after 2021 and short year returns must be efiled. We understand the importance of compliance with irs regulations and are committed to maintaining the highest standards of accountability. The letter, dated 5/9/2024, was not received in our po box until friday, may 17, 2024. Our tax preparer was out of the office, and it was impossible to efilethe return at that time. The 10 day deadline was 5/19/2024, which was a sunday, hence, we were unable to file it then. We respectfully request your consideration for penalty relief. We believe that our prompt response to rectify the situation demonstrates our good faith and commitment to rectifying the oversight. The organization is a very small non-profit, with an operating budget of 45,000. It does not have employees and is run by volunteers only. An irs penalty could significantly strain the organization's limited financial resources, potentially diverting funds away from its core mission and jeopardizing its ability to serve the community.
