Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of the organization is to protect children from undetected vision impairment and preventable blindness by establishing our country's first nationwide vision screening program.Our vision is to serve as a catalyst for a dramatic improvement in accessibility and standardization of vision screenings to support detection of the most prevalent and severe vision disorders. VisionQuest 20/20's goal is not to perform vision screenings. Instead, our vision is to integrate innovative technology into the existing infrastructure of school systems, government health programs and other non-profit vision organizations to help build their capacity to conduct vision screenings so that every child is screened annually.

To protect children from undetected vision impairment and preventable blindness by establishing our country's first nationwide vision screening program.

IRS990/Desc0In 2019, we continued our partnership with United Healthcare (UHC) to provide the EyeSpy 20/20 vision screening program to schools throughout Arizona and Wisconsin. UHC provided VisionQuest 20/20 no additional funds to provide the software, vision screening supplies, training, and technical support to any schools wishing to receive the program in AZ and WI. VisionQuest 20/20 conserved expenditures in 2018 in order to extend the duration of the program through 2019.Since 2017, VisionQuest 20/20 has continued to operate following a substantial reduction in staff personnel including consultants and volunteer engagement. VisionQuest 20/20 continues to have no paid staff and Richard Tirendi is still volunteering as the CEO. In order to continue meeting the demands of the on-going partnership with UHC, we have maintained our engagement with Cloudscaper (the technology developer of EyeSpy 20/20) to provision the software licenses, distribute the supplies, support the technology, manage project logistics, maintain the data systems, and provide training on the program. As in 2018, this engagement was approved by UHC.The original scope of the UHC partnership was to vision screen 500,000 children during the 2018 calendar year. Upon further evaluation, UHC indicated that they wished to extend the program one additional calendar year AND provide the participating schools a non-expiring license to the program (as opposed to a single year of access). The program metrics changed from vision screenings performed to providing access to the vision screening program.This change in scope required VisionQuest 20/20 to retain significant earnings in 2018 in order to support the on-going partnership throughout 2019. This was accomplished in coordination with Cloudscaper by reducing expenditures and returning all unused monies to VisionQuest 20/20. This would afford VisionQuest 20/20 flexibility in how to manage the partnership in 2019, as opposed to "forcing" the organization to engage Cloudscaper.In addition to the UHC partnership, VisionQuest 20/20 continued to support the efforts of the Vitalyst Health Foundation by providing the sourcing, deployment, and training of vision screening devices (not EyeSpy 20/20) for younger and special needs children. In 2019, this program expanded substantially requiring the acquisition of 47 SPOT vision screening devices for distribution and training to recipients as directed by Vitalyst Health Foundation.Given the continued reduction in personnel, VisionQuest 20/20 expended the vast majority of fiscal resources on program support and not on fund development. Management & General expenditures were minimal as well.In 2019, 69,831 children were provided vision screenings using the technology provided by VisionQuest 20/20 at 245 schools in Arizona, Wisconsin, California, Pennsylvania, Texas, North Dakota, South Carolina, Hawaii, Iowa, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Nevada and Florida. The ages of the children served ranged from 18 months to 18 years with majority between ages of 5 years and 18 years. Of all children screened, 17,520 were referred for follow up from an eye care professional. Average testing duration of 2 minutes and 15 seconds per child. Given the COVID-19 pandemic, we are unable to comfortably project the number of vision screenings that will be provided in 2020. Having said that, we are working closely with schools, health professionals, and administrators to support their efforts. In addition to the EyeSpy 20/20 vision screening platform intended for use at school, we are working with Cloudscaper to develop a medically validated, mobile app to provide vision screenings to those students that are not physically attending school on campus.EyeSpy 20/20 vision screening software detects distant visual acuity, depth perception and color blindness and offers the ability to manually enter near visual acuity screening results for consideration when referring children for professional follow up. IRS990/MissionDesc0The mission of the organization is to protect children from undetected vision impairment and preventable blindness by establishing our country's first nationwide vision screening program.Our vision is to serve as a catalyst for a dramatic improvement in accessibility and standardization of vision screenings to support detection of the most prevalent and severe vision disorders. VisionQuest 20/20's goal is not to perform vision screenings. Instead, our vision is to integrate innovative technology into the existing infrastructure of school systems, government health programs and other non-profit vision organizations to help build their capacity to conduct vision screenings so that every child is screened annually.
