Foster's Pond Weed Control Program: Control of invasive weeds and toxic blue-green algae in 120-acre Foster's Pond, a Great Pond owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and visited by an estimated 5,000 people annually. Following our 2024 treatment of 42 acres to control suffocating mats of fanwort, a persistent invasive weed which once dominated Foster's Pond, 2025 saw virtually no remaining infestations. However, an unusually warm season which led to the closure of numerous lakes throughout Massachusetts required us to undertake unprecedented rounds of sampling and lab testing to detect blue-green algae and conduct timely treatments, keeping Foster's Pond open to the public throughout the summer. The FPC continued our regimen of comprehensive vegetation surveys to monitor the presence of invasive weeds and ensure a timely response to keep the Pond biologically diverse.$0$12,896
Community Building:We seek to build a sense of community among residents who live on the Pond, neighbors in Andover and Wilmington who frequent the Pond, and visitors from further away who come to explore this iconic resource. Our program of community building has two components: in-person public events and web-based public information. The aim is to inform the wider community about the ecology and the history of the Pond, what it takes to preserve its fragile ecosystem, and the opportunities for public access. The web site includes such information as our ground-breaking Watershed-Based Plan for reducing nutrient-laden storm run-off throughout the 1.5-square-mile Foster's Pond watershed. The web site also provides a guide to the Pond, describing each of the public reservations, complete with pictures, maps, and directions to public parking. The site is routinely updated to reflect FPC activities and provide notice of upcoming weed treatments, community events, and Pond-related news.$0$1,745
Foster's Pond Dam Maintenance: Maintenance and repair of the historic 165-year-old Foster's Pond Dam is undertaken almost exclusively by volunteers. The Dam, constructed in the 1850s, enlarged the Pond from 50 acres to today's 120 acres. The FPC maintains the "pocket park" at the Dam, affording public access for passive enjoyment and aquatic exploration of Foster's Pond. An estimated 1000 people from Andover and surrounding towns make use of this park from April to November. It provides the primary access by which members of the public can launch a canoe, kayak, or electric-powered fishing boat directly into Foster's Pond. In 2025, we engaged in routine maintenance, with volunteer labor, to keep the Dam in good condition.$0$110
Land Preservation and Public Access: The FPC maintains a wooded 12-acre reservation located to the southwest of the Pond. The FPC land, which includes four acres we acquired in 2023, abuts a 47-acre shoreline reservation owned by the Town of Andover. The FPC land provides public parking and access to the Pond for bird-watchers, hikers and cross-country skiers. This FPC reservation overlays the border between the Towns of Andover and Wilmington, narrowing the gap between a 225-acre expanse of protected land on the shores of the Pond and Wilmington's nearby 154-acre Town Forest. The FPC also maintains a small park at the Foster's Pond Dam, the main public access for hundreds of visitors seeking to launch canoes or kayaks into the Pond. Routine land maintenance activities are undertaken primarily by volunteers, supplemented by contractors.$0$0
