“The winchendon cac was established in 1973 and serves nearly 5% of the winchendon population. It is a human service agency dedicated to helping families and individuals in crisis, and economically disadvantaged families in need of emergency services which may include transportation, advocacy, food or educational programs. The winchendon community action committee building serves as a central location in the town of winchendon providing services and advocacy to those in need. Some of the services that clients have come to depend on include a food pantry which provides, on average, over 550 families per month with a share of shelf-stable foods, bread, fresh produce, meat and milk. During the thanksgiving and christmas holidays, food baskets including turkeys, hams, roasts or food cards are provided to hundreds of local families. At christmas, the winchendon cac hosts a holiday party for local children complete with gifts,food, and entertainment. Elders in the community are remembered as well with holiday gift bags delivered to their door. Medical transportation, emergency mortgage/rental assistance, fuel assistance, new or gently used clothing including winter coats, ged classrooms, educational programs, and referrals to an array of local, state and federal services are just a few of the many services provided. The winchendon cac has been and continues to be the only local and accessible community action agency in the area.”
