Activity 2

Collections-to commemorate the bicentennial of the war of 1812 the museum published a new book, "men of iron" that uses original research to detail the lives of the crew of 1812. This book won first place in the 2013 new england museum association publication award competition. The museum has almost 10,000 artifacts and archival materials in the largest collection of uss constitution related objects in one place. A 2,000 volume library is available to researchers, students and history buffs. The museum's library is open to the public (by appointment) for research and study. The museum and navy yard partners hosted the us postal service's launch of a new forever stamp featuring the image of constitution that is on display at the museum. In the past year the most significant additions to the collection and archives were: 1)one dinner ticket for the new york celebration of the william bainbridge victory over hms java, december 8, 1813; 2)wooden ship model of a corsair, 3)painting of uss constitution at kittery navy yard, by george savary wasson, 1893; 4)ship model of uss constitution built by a crewmember of uss constitution in the 1870's and owned by charles greely loring; 5)silver presentation urn to isaac hall; 6)scrapbook and sundry items from the possession of national cruise crewmember steve sivco; 7)congressional silver medal awarded to lieutenant john aylwin from uss constitution, december 29, 1912; 8)turned live oak snuff box made from live oak from uss constitution during her dry docking in the 1830's; and 9)various correspondence and newspapers from the early 1800's relating to crewmembers and historical events concerning uss constitution.

Activity 3

Exhibits-the museum continues to lead the way in the field of family learning in history museums. A new, interactive exhibit, the 'old ironsides' 1812 discovery center (opened june 2012) explores the causes and consequences of the war of 1812 and explains how the war helped to forge a united national identity. The exhibit also features programming space that focuses on the role of uss constitution in the war and examines her victories against the mighty british navy. The museum also created new signage for the charlestown navy yard and adjacent neighborhood to encourage visitation. In 2012 the museum was the recipient of a 2012 parents choice award for its new interactive website, www.asailorslifeforme.org. The museum received a leadership in history award of merit from the american association for state and local history for the activity book and associated curriculum. The museum launched a bicentennial fundraising initiative to support exhibits, programs, operations and endowment. Thanks to a lynch foundation challenge grant, the museum raised $500,000 for endowment in 2012.
