Mission and Program Overview

Mission

See schedule o. Management sciences for health (msh) works shoulder-to-shoulder with countries and communities to save lives and improve the health of the world's poorest and most vulnerable people by building strong, resilient, sustainable health systems. Together, we seek to achieve universal health coverage- equitable, affordable access to high-quality health services for all who need them- even in fragile, post-crisis settings. For more than 45 years in 150 countries, msh has partnered with governments, civil society, the private sector, and thousands of health workers on locally led solutions that expand access to medicines and services, improve quality of care, help prevent and control epidemics, support inspiring leadership and transparent governance, and foster informed, empowered, and healthier communities.

Major Activities

Activity 2
The Systems for Improved Access to Pharmaceuticals and Services (SIAPS) Program, led by MSH, works to create stronger health systems to ensure health care for all. At least one third of the world's population lacks regular access to medicines. Even when medicines are available, they are not always prescribed, dispensed or used appropriately. Often they are too expensive. SIAPS is designed to strengthen the management of essential medicines and health supplies so that more people can access the health care they need. MSH is committed to making pharmaceuticals and related health services more accessible, more affordable, and of higher quality, but also ensuring more effective pharmaceutical services so that more people can access life-saving treatment for diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria and childhood diarrhea. In the past year, the SIAPS program, funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and working with local partners, strengthened country pharmaceutical supply chains in 21 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Oceania. SIAPS also worked with local partners to develop strong systems for health financing, human resources, governance, information, service delivery, and pharmacovigilance. For more information, visit http://siapsprogram.org/
Activity 3
For people with HIV/AIDS in developing countries, cost-effective, reliable, secure and sustainable supply chains can save millions of lives. For more than six years, the Supply Chain Management System (SCMS) has been saving lives through stronger supply chains. SCMS, managed by MSH and JSI (The Partnership for Supply Chain Management) was established by the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) to ensure a reliable, cost-effective and secure supply of high-quality medicines and health products for HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment. As of June 30, 2013, an estimated 2.5 million patients received life-saving antiretroviral medicines through SCMS. Seventy-six percent of antiretrovirals funded by PEPFAR were safely delivered by SCMS. SCMS also helped avert medicines and supply stock-outs in 20 countries. SCMS recently won a World Bank Science of Delivery Award.SCMS, administered by the US Agency for International Development, provides quality, best-value, health care products to those who need them; deploys innovative solutions to assist programs to enhance their supply chain capacity; and ensures accurate supply chain information. For more information, visit http://scms.pfscm.org/scms

IRS990/Description0MSH's vision is a world where everyone has the opportunity for a healthy life. The Democratic Republic of the Congo Integrated Health Program (DRC-IHP), has contributed to significant improvements in the health of thousands of Congolese women and children, many of them infants. MSH has worked with the Congolese Ministry of Health to create better conditions for, and increase the availability and use of, high-impact health services, products, and practices in 80 target health zones in four provinces in-country. In particular, the project focuses on family planning; maternal, newborn, and child health; nutrition; malaria and tuberculosis; neglected tropical diseases; HIV; and water/sanitation/hygiene. In the past year, over half a million women (556,230) had access to and adopted voluntary family planning methods and 653,417 children under five were treated for malaria in health facilities through antimalarials and bednets. 435,972 people were provided safe drinking water. The DRC-IHP aims to save 80,000 plus lives. The program is funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and partners include International Rescue Committee and Overseas Strategic Consulting.
