“The organization has members but does not have stockholders. Membership at the aquarium provides limited benefits such as unlimited visitation to our exhibits and discounts at the cafe, gift shop and simons theater for a period of 1 year. Membership is a means of providing much needed financial support to the organization and exposing people to our mission. However, membership does not provide entitlements or rights such as electing individuals to the governing body, any influence in establishing policies, procedures or managerial actions or an ownership stake.”
“The form 990 is prepared and reviewed by independent public accountants with information provided by new england aquarium's finance department. Once the document is considered ready for review, copies (excluding schedule b) are distributed to the members of the audit committee of the board of trustees prior to a previously scheduled meeting to review it. Schedule b is not included for review in order to respect donor confidentiality as requested by several donors. In addition to the form 990, a summary of key elements contained in the form 990 is distributed to facilitate the review. A copy of form 990-t is also provided. During the meeting, the tax professional from the organization's public accounting firm and management leads the committee through the summary document, pausing to address questions and facilitate discussion as necessary. Minutes of the meeting are prepared and retained as a record. Any changes resulting from the review are incorporated in the form 990 and the committee chair distributes that document (excluding schedule b, which is redacted to honor the request for confidentiality of several donors) to the full board of trustees with his/her comments before it is filed. The full board is typically given a week to ten days to comment prior to it being filed with the irs.”
“The new england aquarium conflict-of-interest policy was distributed to all board of trustees members and key employees through a docusign link in the first quarter of 2024.”
“The chair of the board of trustees appoints a compensation committee on an annual basis to review and make recommendations to the board of trustees regarding base compensation and any bonus opportunity for the ceo of the new england aquarium. The compensation committee conducts an annual review and provides a memo to the board of trustees outlining the process and criteria used to assess the ceo's performance and the data used to determine compensation. The committee then recommends ceo compensation (base salary and bonus opportunity) to the board of trustees (or the executive committee acting on behalf of the board) for final review and approval during the executive session of the board's spring meeting. The board of trustees also reviews and approves any major changes to benefit plans applicable to the ceo.”
“The organization makes its governing documents including its conflict of interest policy, and its financial statements, available to the public by requesting them in writing or in person to new england aquarium, 1 central wharf, boston, ma 02110. The form 990 is available on www.guidestar.com and the massachusetts attorney general's website as well.”
“Loss on valuation of pension liability -433,612. Net change in beneficial trust 141,829.”
“To generate earnings to support various mission related programs per intent of named endowment fund and general administration.”
“The aquarium accounts for the effect of any uncertain tax positions based on a "more likely than not" threshold to the recognition of the tax positions being sustained based on the technical merits of the position under scrutiny by the applicable taxing authority. If a tax position or positions are deemed to result in uncertainties of those positions, the unrecognized tax benefit is estimated based on a "cumulative probability assessment" that aggregates the estimated tax liability for all uncertain tax positions. The aquarium has identified its tax status as a tax exempt entity and its determination as to what income is related or unrelated as its only significant tax positions; however, the aquarium has determined that such tax positions do not result in an uncertainty requiring recognition. The aquarium is not currently under examination by any taxing jurisdiction. The aquarium's federal and state income tax returns are generally open for examination for three years following the date filed.”
“Loss on valuation of pension liability -433,612. Net change in beneficial trust 141,829.”
“Marine life center expenses 41,596.”

IN ADDITION TO ITS EXHIBITS, THE AQUARIUM OPERATES THE SIMONS THEATRE, GIFT SHOP, ON-SITE DINING OUTLETS, CATERED EVENTS, AND PROGRAMMING IN MARINE RESEARCH, CONSERVATION, AND EDUCATION. THE AQUARIUM RELIES ON REVENUE FROM ADMISSIONS, RETAIL SALES, AND EVENTS; PRIVATE GIFTS AND GRANTS; AND FEDERAL AND STATE FUNDING FOR MOST OF ITS OPERATIONS. THESE REVENUES AND SUPPORT ARE PRIMARILY DERIVED FROM VISITORS AND DONORS FROM THE GREATER BOSTON AREA, THE NEW ENGLAND REGION, AND NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL TOURISTS TO THE CITY.WELCOMING NEW ANIMALS, UNVEILING ENGAGING NEW EXHIBITS THAT INSPIRE VISITORS, CONDUCTING IMPACTFUL RESEARCH, AND ADVOCATING FOR THE OCEAN FROM LOCAL TO INTERNATIONAL LEVELS ARE JUST A FEW OF THE WAYS THE NEW ENGLAND AQUARIUM CONTINUED TO PROTECT THE BLUE PLANET IN 2024.2024 NOTABLE HIGHLIGHTS OF EXHIBITS AND VISITOR EXPERIENCE:THE AQUARIUM OPENED "HEALTHY CORALS, HEALTHY REEFS," A 15-FOOT, NEARLY 5,000-GALLON EXHIBIT THAT IS HOME TO A VARIETY OF LIVE CORALS NATIVE TO THE INDO-PACIFIC REGION AND FEATURES SPECIES NEW TO THE AQUARIUM, SUCH AS WRASSES, SURGEONFISH, BUTTERFLYFISH, AND REEF-DWELLING INVERTEBRATES. IT JOINED FIVE OTHER INSTITUTIONS ACROSS THE CITY OFFERING FREE ADMISSION TO BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS (BPS) STUDENTS AND UP TO THREE OF THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS ON THE FIRST TWO SUNDAYS OF EVERY MONTH THROUGHOUT 2024. IN TOTAL, 14,718 VISITORS CAME TO THE AQUARIUM THROUGH THIS BPS SUNDAYS PROGRAM.DURING MASSACHUSETTS' FEBRUARY SCHOOL VACATION WEEK, THE AQUARIUM CREATED A CIVIC ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITY FOR AQUARIUM VISITORS OF ALL AGES IN SUPPORT OF THE SEA TURTLE RESCUE ASSISTANCE AND REHABILITATION ACT (STRAA) AND COLLECTED 1,740 SIGNATURES TO SHARE WITH MEMBERS OF CONGRESS IN SUPPORT OF THE BILL. STRAA WOULD ESTABLISH A FEDERAL GRANT PROGRAM TO SUPPORT FACILITIES THAT RESCUE AND REHABILITATE SEA TURTLES ACROSS THE U.S., INCLUDING THE AQUARIUM'S SEA TURTLE HOSPITAL IN QUINCY, MA.ADDITIONALLY, THE AQUARIUM CELEBRATED WORLD OCEAN DAY IN JUNE WITH FREE, ALL-AGES ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMMING AROUND THE THEME OF "CONNECTING COMMUNITIES, EMPOWERING ACTIONS FOR OUR OCEAN." THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER, THE COALITION FOR A RESILIENT AND INCLUSIVE WATERFRONT (CRIW), OF WHICH THE NEW ENGLAND AQUARIUM IS A FOUNDING MEMBER, OFFERED A ROSTER OF WELLNESS ACTIVITIES FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES. THE AQUARIUM ALSO PARTNERED WITH SEVERAL LOCAL NON-PROFITS AND ORGANIZATIONS TO HIGHLIGHT COMMUNITY WELLNESS INITIATIVES DURING THE YEAR. THE AQUARIUM'S LOWELL LECTURE SERIES HOSTED NINE SPEAKERS IN 2024, WHOSE TALKS COVERED A RANGE OF TOPICS ALIGNED WITH THE AQUARIUM'S MISSION, VISION, AND VALUES. THE LECTURES ARE PRESENTED FREE TO THE PUBLIC THROUGH THE FUNDING SUPPORT FROM THE LOWELL INSTITUTE. |
