Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part X, Line 27, 28, 29

Certain amounts presented in the financial statements have been reclassified for 2018 to conform to the 2019 presentation. Unrestricted and temporarily restricted net assets have been restated to reflect a reclassification of endowment assets. The organization has two donor-restricted funds in which the net appreciation is unrestricted; however, in accordance with u.s. Gaap such net appreciation should be reflected as temporarily restricted until appropriated for expenditure (time restriction).

FORM 990, PART XI, LINE 9:

Financial Statement Notes

PART II, LINE 3:

All seven of the conversation easements held by the organization were acquired prior to 2006. The value of conservation easements is included in the balance sheet. Expenses associated with monitoring, inspecting, handling of violations, and enforcing conservation easements during the year are reported as expenses in the year incurred on the organization's revenue and expenses statement.

PART II, LINE 9:

All seven of the conversation easements held by the organization were acquired prior to 2006. The value of conservation easements if included in the balance sheet. Expenses associated with monitoring, inspecting, handling of violations, and enforcing conservation easements during the year are reported as expenses in the year incurred on the organization's revenue and expenses statement.

PART III, LINE 4:

In accordance with the practice usually followed by museums, the organization does not carry its collections on the statement of financial position. Since items acquired for collections by purchase are not capitalized, the cost of those acquisitions are reported as decreases in net assets in the statement of activities. The proceeds from items disposed of are reported as increases in the appropriate class of net assets in the statement of activities. Contributed works of art, historical treasures and similar assets that are not added to the collection are reported as assets held for sale on the statement of financial position at their fair values at the date of the gift.

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization is exempt from federal income taxes other than unrelated business income under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code (irc) and also has received classification as a massachusetts public charity. Accounting principles generally accepted in the united states of america require the organization's management to evaluate tax positions taken by the organization and recognize a tax liability (or asset) if the organization has taken any uncertain tax positions that more than likely would not be sustained upon examination by the internal revenue service (irs). Management has analyzed the tax positions taken by the organization and has concluded that as of june 30, 2019, there are no uncertain positions taken or expected to be taken that would require recognition of a tax liability (or asset) or disclosure in the financial statements. The organization is subject to routine audits by taxing jurisdictions; however there are currently no audits for any tax periods in progress.

IRS990/Desc0HISTORIC DEERFIELD IS A UNIQUE MUSEUM, WHICH MAINTAINS 55 BUILDINGS (12 OF WHICH ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC) AND FOCUSES ON THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SMALL-TOWN AMERICA TO OUR NATIONAL CULTURE. HISTORIC DEERFIELD OFFERS A BROAD RANGE OF PROGRAMMING RELATED TO THE CORE AREAS OF ITS MISSION: HISTORY, PRESERVATION, MATERIAL CULTURE STUDIES, AND NATURAL HISTORY. FAMILY PROGRAMMING AT THE HISTORY WORKSHOP DURING THE YEAR INCLUDED "TEA TIME: ALL ABOUT TEA, AND "A CLEAN SWEEP: THE HISTORY AND CRAFTING OF BROOMS." HISTORIC DEERFIELD ALSO OFFERED NUMEROUS OPEN HEARTH COOKING CLASSES AND AN AUTUMN SLATE OF UNIQUE HISTORIC TRADE DEMONSTRATIONS. SPECIAL PROGRAMS INCLUDED THE PATRIOTS' DAY REVOLUTIONARY MUSTER, MR. POTTER'S NINETEENTH-CENTURY MAGIC SHOW, GIFT MAKING, AND FAMILY-FRIENDLY SONGS AND STORIES. SPECIAL TOPIC PROGRAMS HIGHLIGHTED THE MUSEUM'S WEALTH OF MATERIAL CULTURE. A FASHION SYMPOSIUM IN SEPTEMBER PROVIDED AN IN-DEPTH LOOK AT THE BROAD MEANINGS OF CONFLICT ON CLOTHING AND TEXTILES THAT DEFINED CULTURE IN NORTH AMERICA, AND A ONE-DAY PROGRAM IN APRIL EXPLORED THE VARIOUS FURNITURE MAKERS AND THEIR CUSTOMERS IN THE CONNECTICUT RIVER VALLEY. EXHIBITIONS INCLUDED "DRESSED REHEARSAL: CLOTHING AND PERFORMANCE," A DISPLAY OF COSTUMES IN THE MUSEUM HOUSES WHICH LOOKED AT THE WAYS AMERICANS PERFORMED A ROLE AS THEY DRESSED FOR DIFFERENT OCCASIONS IN PRIVATE AND PUBLIC SPACES. ALSO THE EXHIBITION "INSPIRED DESIGN: ASIAN DECORATIVE ARTS AND THEIR ADAPTATIONS," WHICH HIGHLIGHTED THE INFLUENCE OF GLOBAL PRODUCTS ON LOCALLY MADE GOODS, OPENED IN THE FLYNT CENTER OF EARLY NEW ENGLAND LIFE IN MARCH. THE SUMMER LECTURE SERIES, "READING OBJECTS, FINDING HISTORIES," EXPLORED WHAT ARTIFACTS CAN TEACH US AS BRIDGES BETWEEN PAST AND PRESENT. THE WINTER LECTURE SERIES, "NATIVE VOICES: RECOVERING AMERICAN HISTORIES," WAS DEVOTED TO RE-CENTERING INDIGENOUS PEOPLES' EXPERIENCE AND PERSPECTIVES WITHIN BROADER AMERIAN NARRATIVES AND HISTORIES. THREE NATIONALLY-KNOWN ACADEMIC LECTURERS PARTICIPATED. THIS PAST YEAR THE MUSEUM ADDED 110 OBJECTS TO ITS EXTENSIVE COLLECTION OF APPROXIMATELY 27,000 ARTIFACCTS AND WELCOMED 14,000 VISITORS AND PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS DURING THE YEAR.
