Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A, PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Fruitlands museum, located in harvard, ma, was founded in 1914 by preservationist, historian, author and collector clara endicott sears. Sears was a descendent of the peabodys and endicotts, winthrops and sears, and her family tree was rooted in boston. Fruitlands and her summer home, "the pergolas", served as impressive showpieces similar to edith wharton's the mount. Today, the museum is home to four collections rich in stories and perched on 210 majestic acres of meadows and woods. Fruitlands provides its thousands of visitors an opportunity to hike and commune with nature through exploration of its 2+ miles of woodland trails, learn about the lives of the transcendentalists through a visit to the fruitlands farm house, the site of a utopian experiment led by bronson alcott; a visit to the shaker museum; a stop in the native american gallery and a visit to the art gallery, in operation year-round, presenting innovative exhibits, a permanent exhibit of hudson river paintings and art inspired by both the contemporary issues and subjects covered in our permanent collection. Fruitlands is supported by the following core priorities and core values: community: fruitlands is a welcoming and accessible place with opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. We value our community and are eager to invite people to become a part of it. We are collaborative, inclusive in our reach and honest in our commitment to serving the changing needs of our audiences. Our landscape and programs inspire and nurture the creative spirit. We understand the connection of human beings to the land and to each other. Collections: the objects and the stories that bring our mission to life are found in our collections. We are committed to their preservation, interpretation and growth with an emphasis on our living collection; the land. Excellence: continuous improvement drives our efforts each day. We understand the highest standards in all areas of the work that we do and aim to exceed them. Sustainability: we actively work to ensure that all of the museum's resources are protected and maintained to ensure they are preserved for future generations. Innovation: our experiences will evoke curiosity in our audiences and inspire positive actions in our communities. We will maintain institutional curiosity to find solutions and build connections.

Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 1A:

The museum follows u.s. Gaap standards for collection items as they met all of the following criteria: held for public exhibition, education, or research in furtherance of public service rather than financial gain; projected, kept unencumbered, cared for, preserved; and subject to an organizational policy that requires the proceeds of items that are sold to be used to acquire other items for collections. The collections are not recognized as assets on the accompanying statements of financial position. Purchases of collection items are recorded as expenses in the year in which the items are purchased

PART III, LINE 4:

Fruitlands is a regional museum located 30 miles west of the boston metropolitan area. Fruitlands museum was founded in 1914 by clara endicott sears to commemorate the inspirational ideals of the transcendentalists, the shakers, native americans and 19th century artists of new england. The fruitlands farmhouse is a national historic landmark and the entire property is national register historic district. Fruitlands attracts visitors to onsite activities, including general admission, off-season programming, concerts, school programs, lectures, facility rentals, and tea room guests as well as off-site outreach programs to schools, senior centers and historical societies.

PART V, LINE 4:

The organization's endowment funds are used for property support, to inspire and educate through art, nature and history and other general operating expenses.

PART X, LINE 2:

Fruitlands museum, inc. Accounts for the effect of any uncertain tax positions based on a "more likely than not" threshold to the recognition of the tax positions being sustained based on the technical merits of the position under scrutiny by the applicable taxing authority. If a tax position or positions are deemed to result in uncertainties of those positions, the unrecognized tax benefit is estimated based on a "cumulative probability assessment" that aggregates the estimated tax liability for all uncertain tax positions. Fruitlands museum, inc. Has identified its tax status as a tax-exempt entity and its determination as to its income being related or unrelated as its only significant tax positions and has determined that such tax positions do not result in an uncertainty requiring recognition. Fruitlands museum, inc. Is not currently under examination by any taxing jurisdiction. Federal and state income tax returns are generally open for examination for three years following the date filed.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3FRUITLANDS MUSEUM, INC.
