“There are no separate classes of members in the organization and all members have equal rights. While there is a board of directors that serves as the governing body, the board members do not have extra privileges and have the same rights as the members.”
“The governing body is directly elected by the eligible members during its annual membership assembly.”
“The amendment or revision of the by-laws or change to the certificate of incorporation, or any resolution by any member to authorize a petition for dissolution, including a judicial petition or authorization of plan of dissolution and distribution of assets in a non-judicial dissolution of the corporation shall require approval from the board.”
“The governing body and management are furnished first with a copy of the draft form 990. Form 990 will only be filed when it has been approved and signed by management.”
“No member of the governing board shall participate in any meeting, discussion, or vote on any matter in which the member, or a member of the members immediate family, has a potential conflict of interest due to a material economic interest related to the matter under consideration. When such a situation arises, the board member shall disclose the potential conflict of interest and shall be excused from the meeting for the duration of the discussion and any vote on the affected matter. If a potential conflict of interest appears to exist and has not been disclosed, the board chairperson, or the presiding officer of the meeting, shall make an inquiry to determine whether such a conflict exists.”
“The organization will provide governing documents, conflict of interest, and financial statements to the public upon request.”
“Damayan empowers filipino migrant workers to fight for their labor, health, gender, and immigrant rights. The organization's purpose is to build workers' power to eliminate labor and human trafficking, fight wage theft and discrimination, and demand fair labor standards to achieve economic and social justice for all.”
“Social services - in 2024, our social services program advanced health and wellness among our under-served filipino immigrant communities, especially undocumented and uninsured individuals, through targeted and widespread outreach and critical alliances and partnerships. We organized two free health screening events in collaboration with filipino medical providers, serving 200 community members and referring them to vital urgent and preventative care. Through our partnership with the american italian cancer founcation, we deliverd no-cost breast cancer screenings to 30 women workers, offering potentially life-saving early detection. We referred over 150 community members to critical services, including idnyc, nyc care, the institure of family health, and the department of consumer and worker protection, for healthcare access and tax support. Additionally, we conducted two mental health workshops focused on survivors of labor trafficking, addressing trauma, burnout, and isolation stemming from the abuses in the domestic work industry, labor trafficking and forced family separation.”
“Workers and immigrants' rights - damayan empowers filipino migrant domestic workers and trafficking survivors in new york city ro reclaim their rights and dignity. Our comprehensive services help workers recover stolen wages, combat labor trafficking, obtain humanitarian visas, and build collective worker power to advocate for systemic change in the domestic work industry. We conducted 20+ know your rights training sessions reaching over 400 community members on immigration, labor, and health rights regardless of immigration status. We organized four legal clinics providing case management and direct attorney access for trafficking survivors and undocumented workers. Through community outreach, we reached over 5,000 individuals, significantly increasing awareness of available resources and protections. Most of our damayan members are women domestic workers who work as nannies, babysitters, housekeepiers, and caregivers. In partnership with werise nanny training program, cornell workser institute, and carroll gardens association, we launched a peer-led training program for domestic workers seeking to advance their careers. Led by trainers with lived experience as domestic workers, the program covered social-emotional development, pediatrics, preventing secual harassment, home as workplace, cpr/firs aid, and community organizing-equipping workers with both technical skills and labor rights knowledge. Damayan remains committed to empower domestic workers and raise the standards in the labor industry. These integrated efforts have significantly advanced protections and empowered the rights for migrant domestic workers and trafficking survivors while building sustainable worker power for long-term advocacy and systemic change.”
“Membership and leadership development program - damayan is dedicated to building and empowering its membership, primarily filipino migrant women domestic workers and trafficking survivors, by building leadership capacity, deepening community engagement, and connecting members to critical services and advocacy opportunities. In 2024, we recruited 300 new and returning members, providing them with access to legal clinics, wage recovert support, humanitarian visa assistance, and family reunification services through our tvap program. Members also participated in know your rights (kyr) trainings and workforce development initiatives designed to meet their immediate needs and long-term goals. Through our workers academy, a four-part workshop series covering migration stories, labor and immigration rights, and labor trafficking, we created a safe, educational space that builds collective understanding of systemic root casuses of trafficking and leadership development among workers. In 2024, we trained new worker leaders and further developed the skills of 10 existing social justice leaders. We have a trafficking survivor as a full-time case manager and organizer and incude a survivor as board chair, ensuring survivor leadership is embedded at every level of our organization. Our program transforms members into active agents of change, equipping them with knowledge, skills, and platforms to advocate for themselves and their communities while strengtehning damayan's grassroots power and mission.”
“Anti labor trafficking - our anti-labor trafficking program, supported by the trafficking victims assistance program (tvap) and oak foundation, provides comprehensive case management and community organizing to combat labor trafficking and modern-day slavery affecting filipino migrant workers. We connect survivors to legal and social services essential for recovery and reintegration while empowering them as leaders in the movement against trafficking. In 2024, we helped five survivors obtain humanitarian trafficking (t) visas and facilitated family reunification for five survivors through collaboration with the international organization for migration (iom). To date, our program has helped 82 surviviors secure t visas, including 22 survivors with 79 childrend and 32 spouses. We currently manage approximately 20 cases, providing sustained support through the recovery process. Five survivors courageously shared their stories publicly, raising critical community awaeness about labor trafficking and its impact on vulnerable workers. By centering survivor voices and experiences, we have established a strong foundation for community organizing among trafficking survivors, encouraging their active involvement in advocacry efforts and leadership roles that amplify their power in the fight against labor trafficking. Our integrated approach, combining direct legal services, family reunification support, and surivor-led organizing, addresses both immediate needs and systemic change. We continue to provide essential support for healing while emplowering survivors as advocates and leaders in combating modern-day slavery.”
