“While the dramatic effects of the late 2017 hurricanes irma and maria are no longer international news, in some cases their consequences remain just as severe or are only just now revealing their impact. Birdscaribbean raised funds to develop a grants program for partners assessing changes in bird populations or their habitats, including the bridled quail-dove on st. Eustatius and the endemic barbuda warbler. Funds also went to projects that aimed to increase the awareness and appreciation for local biodiversity conservation though a combination of community and school volunteer opportunities and presentations. Lastly, but importantly, we have continued our work to help restore critical bird habitats. Ten projects on four islands have already been undertaken, examples being: purchase of 300 mangrove seedlings as well as 500 other plants to begin a long-term restoration project in st. Maarten, restoration and replanting of red mangrove at anguilla's west end pond, restoration and enhancement of nesting habitat for red-billed tropicbirds on anguilla's dog island and prickly pear cays, planting of native trees in the british virgin islands.”

“Birdscaribbean has created funds named after individuals who made important contributions to caribbean conservation. The founders award is given out to a student for best presentation at the biennial international conference and provides that individual with a life membership to birdscaribbean. The david s. Lee fund for the conservation of caribbean birds was established in 2016 and funds innovative avian conservation research that is coupled with a commitment to engaging with local scientists, government officials, organizations and communities, as appropriate, to involve them in the research, share results, and build interest in local birds and their conservation. Five scholars received lee awards in 2018. The recently created betty petersen conservation fund was created to support conservation projects in the caribbean that engage and empower communities and stakeholders to both protect and sustainably benefit from their birds. Three projects focusing on endangered birds endemic to the caribbean were selected from the first wave of applications in 2018.”

“Caribbean birding trail - the carribean birding trail was developed to raise global awareness of the unique birds and biodiversity of the caribbean and to create a sustainable economy around rare species, in an effort to protect them. The "trail" is actually a multi-faceted program to train and support local tour guides and encourage nature tourism that supports local communities by outreahc to individuals and international tour companies. Festivals - bird conservation in the caribbean relies on the awareness and stewardship of local people. To this end, birdscaribbean supports the celebration of the caribbean endemic bird festival (cebf) in april and may, and international migratory bird day (imbd) in september and october. Finally, birdscaribbean has a robust suite of flagship programs to conduct science, capacity-building, education, and networking with multiple partners in the caribbean region.”
