ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0We are requesting a short period from May 1 2024 to June 30 2024. The extenuating circumstances are as follows: The Board of Directors directed a change of accounting period in 2023. However on July 10 2023 Washington County in Vermont sustained considerable flood damage which affected our headquarters. We had to reestablish the accounting data for that year while continuing to operate daily after Headquarters re-opened. Our accountant filed the 990EZ for fy2023 on March 15 2024. He indicated that we needed to revise our chart of accounts substantially to be more streamlined and easy for accountants to work with. We revised our system for the period beginning May 1 2024 as he suggested although we needed to extend the filing date to March 15 2025. In January 2025 our accountant advised us that he was ill and was closing his practice as one of a two partner firm. The remaining partner said that he would be unable to take over the account and advised us to complete the return ourselves and file it by the due date of March 15 2025 since it was the middle of the tax season and it was unlikely that we would find a new firm to work with in such a short period. That was accomplished. I continued to look into the requirements for filing a change in accounting period. We are requesting a change using data from the 2-month period May 1 to June 30 2024 even though it will be considered a late return since the due date was November 15 2024. This would extend our fiscal year 2025 to end June 30 2025 and give us time to find an accountant to do the financial review and 990EZ as required by our constitution and bylaws. We understand that there will likely be a late fee. Since we are an exempt organization whose total mission is to support The American Legion veterans and their families I believe it will not prejudice the interests of the government to approve our request.
