Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The core foundation team vets out all partners, contractors and vendors as a group and spend countless hours understanding and making decisions to identify if there are any conflicts, and more importantly, if they are the right fit to be a part of this life-changing work. We ensure they know how to take pride in this work and interact with our families and those who we serve. This is a group decision, not an individual decision so that no one is able to operate in a silo.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 1

Through its core i promise program that serves more than 1,700 akron public schools students identified by aps as at-risk, the foundation addresses the educational needs and eliminates barriers for the entire family so all can pursue a greater future. The foundation provides programs, mentors, incentives and strategic outreach to the students and their entire families year-round to help them be successful and ultimately graduate from high school, after which the foundation has secured scholarship opportunities for all eligible i promise students to either the university of akron, kent state university or stark state college. To prepare students and families for life on a college campus, the foundation established the i promise institute on the ua campus that hosts family gatherings and will be an around-the-clock resource for i promise students once they arrive on campus. And that is just the beginning. Recognizing the deeply-rooted barriers these students and families are facing, the foundation opened the i promise school in 2018 that would instill social emotional learning and a "we are family" philosophy from the onset. Ips also maintains a full-time family resource center that provides wide-ranging services for all students and family members including legal aid, medical care, ged classes, financial literacy programming, job & family services, and a full-time food and essentials pantry. Eliminating needs and establishing trust with the families, in 2019 the foundation opened the i promise village that serves as transitional housing for all students in immediate need of safe and stable housing. At the village, families live rent-free and family-first with access to resources and skill-building programming to help them prepare for their next phase. Later in 2019, the foundation took this commitment one step further, entering into a partnership with eandc to develop long-term i promise housing planned for opening in 2023. The foundation also purchased tangiers which is being transformed into house three thirty, a space for the community to gather that will also provide financial stability & job training for students and families within the foundation's program. Additionally, the foundation purchased a building across the street from house three thirty which is being transformed into i promise healthquarters, which will be a community-based primary care center offering medical, dental, and optometry supports with on-site lab services and a reduced-cost pharmacy provided by axesspointe as well as mental health services from coleman health services. Designed with the needs of i promise families in mind, i promise healthquarters will serve the entire akron community with family-oriented primary care. All located within a few city blocks of the i promise school, the foundation has physically and emotionally transformed the akron community, lifting up its students, families and partners to provide an all-encompassing model for creating change in urban communities.

Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 1A:

The collection consists of personal and professional sports paraphernalia of the foundation's founder and current board member. The primary focus of the collection is to maintain, exibit, interpret, and engage visitors. Collection items are acquired through purchases or donations and are not capitalized. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in net assets without donor restrictions. During 2024 and 2023, there were no purchases of collection items. Contributions of collection items are not recognized in the consolidated statements of activities and changes in net assets. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are reflected in the consolidated statements of activities and changes in net assets based on the absence or existence and nature of donor-imposed restrictions. There were no sales or deaccessions in 2024 or 2023. Collection items are held for public exhibition rather than financial gain; are protected, kept encumbered, cared for and preserved; and are subject to a policy that requires the proceeds from sales of collection items to be used to acquire other items for collections.

PART X, LINE 2:

IRS990/Desc0THE I PROMISE SCHOOL: LEBRON'S MISSION TO RAISE GRADUATION RATES IN HIS HOMETOWN OF AKRON, OHIO, HAS EVOLVED INTO A MOVEMENT THAT IS REDEFINING WHAT FAMILY AND COMMUNITY LOOKS LIKE. AFTER A DECADE OF LEARNING AND LISTENING TO THE STUDENTS AND FAMILIES IT SERVES, THE FOUNDATION'S "WE ARE FAMILY" PHILOSOPHY MANIFESTED IN THE OPENING OF THE I PROMISE SCHOOL IN 2018 THAT PRIORITIZES SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING AND LEADING WITH LOVE ALONGSIDE A STEM-BASED CURRICULUM. AS PART OF ITS GROUNDBREAKING MODEL FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS, IPS MAINTAINS A FULL-TIME, ON-SITE FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER THAT PROVIDES WIDE-RANGING SERVICES FOR ALL STUDENTS AND FAMILY MEMBERS INCLUDING LEGAL AID, MEDICAL CARE, GED CLASSES, FINANCIAL LITERACY PROGRAMMING, JOB & FAMILY SERVICES, AND A FULL-TIME FOOD AND ESSENTIALS PANTRY. IN ADDITION, THE FOUNDATION OFFSETS THE COST OF ADDITIONAL EDUCATORS TO KEEP CLASS SIZE AND STUDENT TO TEACHER RATIOS LOW FOR A MORE EFFICIENT LEARNING ENVIRONMENT. IN AN EFFORT TO SUPPORT THE IPS EDUCATORS DURING THIS HARD WORK, THE FOUNDATION REGULARLY COVERS THE COST OF CLASSROOM AND PROJECT SUPPLIES AND PROVIDES ADDITIONAL RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS TO PRIORITIZE THEIR WELL-BEING AS THEY POUR SO MUCH INTO THEIR STUDENTS. MOST RECENTLY, IPS INTRODUCED SPORTS AS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM. THE FOUNDATION FULLY FUNDS THE ENTIRE SPORTS PROGRAM AT IPS WHICH INCLUDES COACHES, UNIFORMS, FACILITIES, TRANSPORTATION, MEALS, INSURANCE, BANQUESTS, AND TEAM BUILDING. THE FOUNDATION IS ALWAYS LOOKING FOR NEW WAYS TO SUPPORT THE IMPORTANT WORK BEING DONE AT IPS.
