Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The executive director works with the sr. Finance manager and contract accountant to prepare the 990. Once complete, the executive director and treasurer perform a detailed review with the finance committee. After any changes are made, the 990 goes to the board for a final review for any changes. After approval, the 990 is then filed with the irs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Annually, board members complete a conflict of interest form. Treasurer and the executive director review conflict of interest forms at that time. When restrictions are imposed on a person with a conflict, the person with the restriction abstains from voting and leaves the discussion. When the discussion is complete, the board member/officer returns.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

For the executive director, a review committee is established annually by the board to review ed evaluation. The committee then recommends changes or adjustments to compensation salary. Compensation surveys are used in the process. The process was last completed in fall of 2019 (prior was july, 2018).

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization makes its articles of incorporation, bylaws, conflict of interest policy and financial statements available to the public upon request.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

Asc 740 statement from audited financial statements: the organization is exempt from federal income taxes under the provisions of section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. The organization is also exempt from minnesota income taxes. The organization reviews income tax positions taken or expected to be taken in income tax returns to determine if there are any income tax uncertainties. This includes positions that the entity is exempt from income taxes or not subject to income taxes on unrelated business income. The organization recognizes tax benefits from uncertain tax positions only if it is more likely than not that the tax positions will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities, based on the technical merits of the positions. The organization has identified no significant income tax uncertainties. The organization files information returns as a tax-exempt organization and has identified no income tax uncertainties. Should that status be challenged in the future, all years since inception could be subject to review by the internal revenue service.

IRS990/Desc0ORG:WE EDUCATE AND ENGAGE ACROSS OUR AUDIENCES OF EDUCATORS, YOUTH, AND COMMUNITIES. OUR PROGRAMS EXTEND FROM CITY-LEVEL YOUTH CAMPAIGNS TO SCHOOL DISTRICTS, TO MENTORSHIP OF REGIONAL PARKS, TO ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL MULTI-SECTOR DELEGATIONS TO THE U.N. CLIMATE CONFERENCE. AS WE NAVIGATED THE COVID PANDEMIC AND RACIAL UNREST THIS YEAR, WE SAW TREMENDOUS INCREASE IN INTEREST AND PARTICIPATION IN OUR PROGRAMS, LIKELY ATTRIBUTABLE TO VIRTUAL AND COMMUNITY-BASED RESPONSE. WE HAVE INTENTIONALLY DIVERSIFIED OUR STAFF AND BOARD, AND WE ARE ADDRESSING OUR HIRING AND ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE TO MEET A DIVERSE WORKFORCE WITH OUR NEW ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND EQUITY MANAGER, HIRED THIS YEAR. PROGRAMS:THIS PAST YEAR, WE BROUGHT OUR STORYTELLING WORK TO MUSICIANS INVOLVED IN BAND TOGETHER, A CONCERT FOR CLIMATE ACTION THAT BROUGHT TOGETHER MORE THAN 800 MINNESOTANS TO GEAR UP FOR A YEAR OF ACTION. FOLLOWING THE CONCERT, WE LAUNCHED THE YEAR-LONG ACTIVATION CAMPAIGN, INCLUDING A PODCAST FEATURING ARTIST INTERVIEWS ON HOW CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS THEIR MUSIC AND CREATIVE PROCESS, AS WELL AS A WEBINAR SERIES DESIGNED TO SHOW HOW TO USE YOUR VOICE, CHOICE, AND VOTE FOR CLIMATE ACTION.TO CELEBRATE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF EARTH DAY IN APRIL, WE PUBLISHED EYEWITNESS: MINNESOTA VOICES ON CLIMATE CHANGE, AN ANTHOLOGY OF POEMS, STORIES, AND ARTWORK DEPICTING A RANGE OF CLIMATE CHANGE EXPERIENCES FROM 50+ AUTHORS. COMBINING PERSPECTIVES FROM PROMINENT AND ORDINARY MINNESOTANS, THE BOOK EMPOWERS THE PUBLIC TO IDENTIFY THEIR CLIMATE STORY AS WELL AS EDUCATE POLICYMAKERS TO BUILD POLITICAL WILL FOR CLIMATE CHANGE SOLUTIONS. SO FAR, WE'VE DISTRIBUTED MORE THAN 400 BOOKS TO READERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. 2,350 PEOPLE ENGAGED IN CLIMATE CHANGE STORYTELLING THROUGH THE EYEWITNESS BOOK AND WORKSHOP SERIES.WE PARTNERED WITH THE WILD CENTER'S YOUTH CLIMATE PROGRAM AND NOAA'S CLIMATE OFFICE TO BUILD OUR 15TH ANNUAL "STAY-IN-STITUTE" FOR CLIMATE CHANGE EDUCATION. BECAUSE OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THE THREE-DAY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING WAS COMPLETELY VIRTUAL FOR THE FIRST TIME, YET OUR GOALS REMAINED THE SAME: TO GIVE EDUCATORS THE TOOLS, RESOURCES, AND CONFIDENCE TO TEACH CLIMATE CHANGE IN ANY SUBJECT AREA AND CREATE A COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE DEDICATED TO A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO CLIMATE CHANGE EDUCATION. MORE THAN 250 ATTENDEES FROM 30 STATES, AS WELL AS CANADA AND COSTA RICA, LEARNED ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS AND SOLUTIONS STRUCTURED AROUND THE FIVE BEST PRACTICES IN CLIMATE CHANGE EDUCATION.THE 2019 UNITED NATIONS CLIMATE CONFERENCE, OR THE CONFERENCE OF THE PARTIES (COP25), BROUGHT OUR 10TH DELEGATION TO MADRID, SPAIN. FROM OUR DAILY EMAIL DIGEST TO BLOGS AND SOCIAL MEDIA, OUR FOUR DELEGATES (REPRESENTING CLIMATE GENERATION STAFF AND YOUTH, GOVERNMENT, AND NGOS) HIGHLIGHTED THE ROLE OF CIVIL SOCIETY IN PARTICULAR THE LEADERSHIP OF FRONTLINE COMMUNITIES IN THE CLIMATE MOVEMENT, PROVIDING EASY-TO-READ BREAKDOWNS OF THEMES LIKE POLICY UPDATES, CLIMATE REFUGEES AND MIGRATION, AND MORE. 265 SUBSCRIBERS FOLLOWED OUR WINDOW INTO COP PROGRAM.OUR YOUTH PROGRAM CONTINUED TO SUPPORT HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH ACROSS MINNESOTA TO ENGAGE IN CLIMATE CHANGE SOLUTIONS AT THEIR SCHOOLS, IN THE COMMUNITIES AND THROUGH PUBLIC POLICY. IN 2020 WE LAUNCHED AWARDS TO YOUTH ACROSS THE STATE IN SUPPORT OF THEIR CLIMATE JUSTICE ORGANIZING EFFORTS AND MERGED OUR YOUTH PROGRAM WITH THE SUCCESSFUL IMATTER YOUTH PROGRAM.
