THE MISSION OF THE CHILD WELFARE BOARD IS TO PROMOTE AND SUPPORT BENEFITS TO CHILDREN AND FAMILIES SERVED BY CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES THROUGH ASSISTANCE TO FRONT-LINE CASEWORKERS TO SUPPORT THEIR WORK WITH THE CHILDREN AND FAMILIES. IN 2016, THE CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES PROGRAM IN WICHITA COUNTY INVESTIGATED 1,607 NEW INCIDENTS OF ALLEGED CHILD ABUSE. THERE WERE APPROXIMATELY 300 CHILDREN IN SUBSTITUTE CARE IN WICHITA COUNTY FOR THE YEAR AND THESE ARE THE CHILDREN SERVED BY THE CHILD WELFARE BOARD, ALONG WITH THE CHILDREN PLACED WITH RELATIVES AND CHILDREN REMAINING IN THEIR OWN HOMES BUT UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES. THE CHILD WELFARE BOARD PROVIDED CLOTHING ALLOWANCES, SCHOOL SUPPLIES, CAMP FEES, DEPOSITS AND RENT FOR PARENTS SO THAT CHILDREN COULD BE RETURNED TO THE PARENTS, TRANSPORTATION FOR PARENTS TO VISIT THEIR CHILDREN WHILE THEY WERE IN MANAGING CONSERVATORSHIP OF THE AGENCY, BUS TICKETS FOR PARENTS TO GET TREATMENT FOR DRUG AND ALCOHOL ADDICTION, SNACKS FOR THE VISITATION CENTER, GRADUATION GIFTS, CHRISTMAS GIFTS, SNACKS FOR FAMILY GROUP DECISION CONFERENCING, FUNDS TO HELP RELATIVES AND SIGNIFICANT INDIVIDUALS GET HEALTH INSPECTIONS, FIRE INSPECTIONS, TB TESTS, AND PURCHASE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS SO THAT THEY CAN HAVE THEIR RELATIVE CHILDREN PLACED IN THEIR HOME. THE CHILD WELFARE BOARD PROVIDED TECHNOLOGY FOR STAFF TO GET MORE DETAILED CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS ON PARENTS AND/OR RELATIVES SEEKING CUSTODY OF CHILDREN. THE RAINBOW ROOM IS A PROJECT OF THE CHILD WELFARE BOARD. THIS PROGRAM SERVES CHILDREN WHO ARE IN THEIR OWN HOMES OR WITH RELATIVES AND CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES IS WORKING WITH THE FAMILY. THERE IS A PART-TIME SALARIED PERSON WHO OVERSEES THIS PROGRAM. THERE ARE TWO SENIOR WORKS VOLUNTEERS WHO ALSO HELP WITH THIS PROGRAM ON A REGULAR BASIS. IN ADDITION, THERE WERE APPROXIMATELY 15 OTHER VOLUNTEERS DURING THE YEAR. THE VALUE OF THE VOLUNTEER HOURS, INCLUDING THE SENIOR WORKS VOLUNTEERS, WAS $40,038.80. THE RAINBOW HOUSE IS DESIGNED TO SUPPLY CASEWORKERS WITH NEEDED RESOURCES SUCH AS FOOD, CLOTHING, SHOES, BEDS, CAR SEATS, HYGIENE ITEMS, CLEANING SUPPLIES, DIAPERS, WIPES, FORMULA, BOTTLES, QUILTS, FANS AND HEATERS AMONG OTHER THINGS NEEDED TO SERVE CHILDREN WHO WERE ABUSED AND/OR NEGLECTED BUT NOT PLACED BY THE COURT INTO CONSERVATORSHIP OF CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES.
