Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Since 1974, new hampshire hummanities has brought the power of ideas to people of all walks of life, in every corner of the state. Our programs stimulate minds, strengthen community bonds, bolster struggling organizations, and contribute to our state's civic wealth. We connect the people of nh to culture, history, places, ideas, and to one another. We get nh citizens talking about critical issues such as immigration, the role of religon in american life, and comtemporary constitutional challenges. We invite citizens to reason together in facilitated groups, to learn from and listen to one another. We offer professional development that strengthens the teaching of humanities, k-12 and through connections we support adult liteacy and english language acquisition, welcoming new readers and new americans into a world of books, ideas, and opportunity. Nhhc updated their mission statement in december 2022: new hampshire humanities connects people and ideas by delivering and supporting statew

Five additional sites will host Ideas on Tap in 2015. Making Connections Using Drama Storytelling Across the Curriculum was a day-long workshop for K-12 teachers held in Gorham. The documentary video Who Am I Going To Be premiered in Concord to a diverse audience of more than 80 adults and students. Form 990, Part III, Line 4D

Program Service Expenses 19,306, Grants and allocations 0, Revenue 2,757 At the New Hampshire Humanities Council we strive to show, rather than tell, the many ways in which the humanities enhance our shared experiences. To that end, the Humanities Council worked with the creative team at Brown Company Design to create a map that highlights New Hampshires extraordinary cultural treasures. The map features 260 icons that offer a sampling of the rich heritage of the Granite State. From Daniel Webster to Celia Thaxter, from Passaconaway to Marilla Ricker, the map shows the astonishing range of our literary, political, musical, artistic, historical, and cultural heritage.

IRS990/Desc0The Humanities to Go speakers bureau makes high-quality humanities programs available to non-profit and community organizations across the state. These programs are open to the public free of charge. Humanities To Go brings neighbors together for learning and thoughtful conversation and connects NH residents to our states rich historical and cultural resources. This deceptively simple program offers a lifeline to cash-strapped local organizations that could not afford to create or pay for such programs on their own. In 2014, Humanities to Go partnered with 239 local host organizations in 152 NH communities to sponsor 440 programs attended by more than 19,000 people.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Community Project Grants enable the NHHC to be responsive to the needs and interests of New Hampshire residents. In 2014, the NHHC Board of Directors, through its Program Committee, awarded 23 competitive grants, totaling 51,601, which were matched by approximately 115,600 in cash and in-kind community support. Local innovative humanities programming made possible through grant making included community book, film, lecture and discussion series, teacher professional development workshops, community oral history projects, and documentary film production.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0NHHC conducts the Connections adult literacy program. Connections is a book discussion program offered in partnership with adult basic education and ESOL classes, the prisons, and refugee resettlement organizations. Participants are both native speakers and new Americans. From our thematic reading lists, teachers can select books and themes that enhance the curriculum and connect to learners goals and interests. Participants keep copies of their books to read again and share with their families. There were 30 series conducted during 2014 at 17 different adult education programs in NH, attended by approximately 560 participants. A literacy celebration held in April with award-winning childrens author Lois Lowry was attended by more than 600 adults and children, including Connections participants and their families.
