The finance office staff provides input for the audit; the executive director is available for questions by the auditors. The finance office staff and executive director review the draft of the audit and make changes, if needed. The complete audit is reviewed and approved by the board of directors. Copies of the audit are sent to all who provide grant funds and are available for any requests.

Volunteers are an essential part of humility of mary shelter inc, providing crucial support services that are vital to the shelter and the well being of our participants. Every day, willing volunteers donate their time and energy so that hmsi can fulfill its mission of providing temporary housing and services to the homeless. Whether they are sorting donations, doing laundry, cleaning, answering the telephone, providing computer classes, doing yard work, providing life skill classes, painting or filing, humility of mary shelter volunteers know that their work makes a difference. During the fiscal year 120 volunteers provided 2,083 hours of service.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

Income taxes - the organization is exempt from federal income tax in accordance with section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and comparable state law, and contributions to it are tax deductible within limitations prescribed by the code. The organization has been classified as publicly supported organization that is not a private foundation under section 509(a) of the code. In accordance with the income taxes topic of the fasb accounting standards codification, management evaluated the organization's tax position and concluded that the organization has maintained its tax exempt status and has taken no uncertain tax positions that require adjustments to the financial statements. Therefore, no provision or liability for income taxes has been included in the financial statements. With few exceptions, the organization is no longer subject to examination by u.s. Federal, state, or local tax authorities for tax years before 2011.

TRANSITIONAL HOUSING (TH) PROGRAM THE TRANSITIONAL HOUSING PROGRAM ASSISTS HOMELESS PERSONS WHO HAVE A DISABILITY, AND MAY NEED MORE TIME TO FIND HOUSING THAN THE TYPICAL SHELTER STAY ALLOWS, BY PROVIDING A THREE-MONTH PERIOD OF HOUSING AND EXTRA SUPPORTIVE SERVICES. THE PARTICIPANTS WORK WITH A SERVICE COORDINATOR TO SET GOALS AND WORK TOWARDS AN INDEPENDENT LIVING SITUATION. BI-WEEKLY PROGRAM MEETINGS, SUPPORT GROUPS, AND MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING ARE ALSO A PART OF THE PROGRAM. VETERANS TRANSITIONAL PROGRAMTHE VETERANS TRANSITIONAL PROGRAM PROVIDES 17 BEDS AND SERVICE COORDINATION TO HOMELESS VETERANS, WITH THE GOAL OF HELPING THOSE VETERANS ACHIEVE RESIDENTIAL STABILITY, INCREASE THEIR SKILL LEVELS AND/OR INCOME, AND OBTAIN GREATER SELF-DETERMINATION. THIS PROGRAM OFFERS SUPPORTIVE HOUSING FOR UP TO 24 MONTHS AND WORKS IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE LOCAL VA SERVICE CENTER TO OFFER QUALIFYING VETERANS SERVICES SUCH AS CASE MANAGEMENT, EDUCATION, JOB TRAINING, CRISIS INTERVENTION, AND COUNSELING. PERMANENT HOUSING PROGRAMOUR PERMANENT HOUSING PROGRAM ASSISTS HOMELESS PERSONS EXPERIENCING CHALLENGES WITH SEVERE AND PERSISTENT MENTAL ILLNESS, PERSONS IN RECOVERY FROM DRUG AND/OR ALCOHOL DEPENDENCE, AND PERSONS WITH CHRONIC ILLNESS OR PHYSICAL DISABILITIES. THESE INDIVIDUALS RECEIVE LONG TERM SUPPORT TO HELP THEM MOVE TOWARD WELLNESS AND TO FURTHER THEIR SELF-SUFFICIENCY BY IDENTIFYING AND WORKING TOWARD SHORT-TERM OBJECTIVES AND LONG-TERM GOALS. SERVICE COORDINATORS ASSIST OUR PARTICIPANTS TO IDENTIFY RESOURCES THAT WILL HELP THEM TO WORK THROUGH PROBLEMS AND SITUATIONS THAT HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THEIR HOMELESSNESS. THE PERMANENT HOUSING PROGRAM PROVIDES A SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR PROGRAM RESIDENTS TO PURSUE THEIR DREAMS.
