Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 1A:

Historical buildings and collections - in conformity with the practice followed by many museums, the collections, books, manuscripts, and historical buildings purchased and donated are not included in the statement of financial position. The museum staff ensures that its historical buildings and collections are protected and preserved. Collections are subject to a policy that requires the proceeds from sales of collection items be used to acquire new museum objects or for the direct care of collections.

PART III, LINE 4:

The brick store museum is a regional museum of history, decorative arts, and fine arts. The museum collections consist of objects suitable for exhibition, research, interpretation, education and loan. Objects are acquired by donation, purchase, bequest, exchange or other means by which title is transferred to the museum. Each acquisition is considered on the basis of its consistency with the mission defined by the museum, and the museum's ability to care for and benefit from the object. Permanent collection - constitutes objects and archival materials the museum holds in the public trust. They are given the highest possible level of care, and the highest degree of accountability is attached to them. All objects in the museum's permanent collections shall be accessioned. The museum collects: (1) 1. Archival material (including maps, prints, photographs, and manuscripts) dealing with the history of the kennebunks, its towns and people, from the earliest inhabitants to the present day; books written by and about local authors, and such additional reference books needed by museum staff to perform its duties. Archival collections total 1,141 linear feet (approximately 25,000 items), plus 6 map cases and 78 rolled maps. (2)artifacts, including all forms of fine and decorative arts, textiles, clothing, tools and equipment, and household goods which relate to the kennebunks and southern york county by virtue of their having been: (a) created or produced there (b) used for their intended purpose there (c) typical of similar objects known to have been created and/or used there. Library collection - materials in the collection include books, magazines, and trade literature on fine and decorative arts of the types represented in the permanent collection. The library collection materials are not accessioned but are catalogued. The reference library totals 144 linear feet with approximately 1,045 titles. Education collection- items in the education collection are used by the museum for hands-on, inquiry-based exploration in museum exhibitions and programming. Items in the education collection are not accessioned but may be catalogued. They consist mostly of reproductions or original objects of low monetary and historical value. They may also be objects that do not otherwise fit within the scope of the museum's permanent collection but are kept for study purposes. Reproductions are purchased or created by the museum, depending upon programming needs. The teaching collection totals approximately 200 items.

PART V, LINE 4:

The museum holds endowment funds to generate income to support the museum's general activities or to support specific activities as specified by donors.

PART X, LINE 2:

The federal informational tax return of the museum is subject to examination, generally for three years after it was filed.
