The executive committee of the trustees reviews the executive director's performance against stated yearly goals. The yearly compensation, and any increase, is determined by performance. The new england museum association salary and benefits survey is used to ensure that the director's total compensation is within the average of similarly sized museum's in new england.

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Woodlawn nurtures curiosity and a sense of place by promoting downeast maine's cultural heritage through educational and recreational experiences. Under the governance of the hancock county trustees of public reservations, woodlawn offers the people of hancock county and beyond opportunities for recreation and education on a 180 acre historic estate consisting of a historic house, several exhibit buildings, a formal garden and public park. In a normal year, woodlawn exceeds 10,000 person visits to the park each year and over 2500 people tour the museum. Year-round recreational opportunities include two miles of walking trails with story trails for children. Outdoor activities include a community garden, croquet tournaments, family field days, afternoon tea, and musical & theatrical performances on the lawn. In winter, sledding and skating are popular free activities when the weather permits. Visitors also attend lectures and workshops aimed to entertain and inform on topics from historic preservation to land conservation, crafts, gardening and more. The northeast office of the national trust of historic preservation has described woodlawn as being "at the forefront of sites pursing a broader vision of their role in preservation." throughout 2020, covid-19 limited the museum's public activities to those that could be enjoyed safely outdoors. Woodlawn partnered with other nonprofits expanding its role as an increasingly important community asset. In 2021, as covid-19 restrictions eased, use of the grounds increased even more, museum tours resumed on a limited basis, a new permanent exhibit opened, and planning began for full programming to resume in 2022.
